Risen Sapeur Character Guide

Type: Engineer

Threat: High

What the Risen Sapeur Is

The combat engineers of the risen army — larger and stronger than the humans they used to be, swinging axes built for timber, not dueling. Sapeurs are slow, heavy hitters whose overhead swings crater the ground and whose posture bar is thick enough to shrug off casual pokes. They are a positioning fight: the axe covers a huge arc, but almost none of it is behind the Sapeur.

How to Fight Them

Live behind the axe. Circle toward the swinging side after each committed overhead, and punish the recovery with a short string rather than a full combo — the Sapeur's follow-up punishes greedy chains. Stasis is excellent here: locking a Sapeur mid-wind-up converts its slowest, most readable attack into free posture damage, and heavy units lose more to a stagger-critical than fast ones.

Do not parry the overhead — the timing window is deceptively late. Dash through the arc and hit from the side. Save parries for the quick horizontal swipe it uses when you linger behind it too long.

What It Teaches

Sapeurs introduce the heavy-enemy grammar: thick posture, huge arcs, punishing recovery windows that favor patience over aggression. Every later heavyweight — the Volunteers, and several bosses — speaks this language with more vocabulary.
